Starbucks is closing its newly opened store on Ocean Front Walk, citing an inability to provide a safe environment for employees and customers.
Starbucks Says It's Closing Stores Due To Safety. Union Organizers Have Doubts
The store has been open for nearly two years after a site remodel, and in an announcement this week, Starbucks said it will close 16 stores nationwide over safety concerns as the company rebuilds the future of the business.
By the end of July, a total of six stores will close in the Los Angeles area, including 1st & Los Angeles (DoubleTree), 2nd & San Pedro, Hollywood & Vine, Hollywood & Western, Ocean Front Walk & Moss, and Santa Monica & Westmount. . .
A Starbucks spokeswoman said the closings were not the result of a specific event or even a series of events over time, but rather an accumulation of challenges related to substance abuse, homelessness and economic disruption caused by the epidemic. In a statement, the company said the closed stores are no longer places where the company can provide employees, partners and customers with the experience they expect and are accustomed to.
The closures come in two statements from executives that specifically address safety and the company's future.

Howard Schultz returned to the business as CEO in April and released a letter Monday calling for a company overhaul.
"It's clear that we live in a changing world where economic, social and operational pressures are colliding. We're seeing unprecedented cultural divides and economic shocks – while navigating an epidemic, and dealing with a new crisis it seems every day." she said. “All this affects our partners. All of these things affect Starbucks as a company. And all of these things deeply affect the millions of customers who visit our stores every day. Our stores act as windows to America and through them we see the scale of hardship and how people's needs are changing."
Debbie Stroud and Dennis Nelson, senior vice presidents of US operations, sent their own letter to store security.
"You were open and honest with us about your experiences - from feeling better at your job to the many inspiring and heartfelt examples of how you create memorable moments for each other and our customers," they wrote in a letter. to employees. “You also see the challenges our communities face – personal safety, racism, lack of access to healthcare, growing mental health crises, increasing drug use and more. With thousands of community stores across the country, we know these challenges can sometimes play out in our stores as well We read every incident report you file - that's a lot."

They said the company would increase employee training, establish clear procedures for solving problems, design stores to feel safer, change operations (such as closing restrooms and closing stores) to address safety, and provide benefits such as mental health services.
The statement said employees at six major event stores will be transferred to the new locations (there will be 17 in the city after the closings) and the company will continue to help address challenges facing the community. It will build on the existing work of outreach worker programs, foodshare programs and other innovative initiatives.
The Starbucks Outreach Worker Program connects Starbucks stores across the country with local organizations focused on homelessness. The program recently expanded to eight U.S. cities to support retail partners as they address social issues such as homelessness, mental health and substance use disorders. The program was designed in response to partners sharing the challenges they face in markets of greater complexity. It currently has locations in Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, DC, San Diego, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Denver.
