curved glock mag

Curved Glock Mag - I wasn't originally interested in the 9mm AR. I didn't like the look of regular Colt magazines. I liked the slanted-back look of the Glock magazine even less. And I didn't like the look of the small belly in the big belly wave. Dedicated DDLES and QC10-type 9mm plummets solved the small magazine, large magwell problem, but used Colt or Glock straight magazines. Then I saw a picture of the new Sig 9mm MPX and I really liked it. It looked like the love child of an AR15 and an MP5 and it got me thinking.

I bought a Wiselite/Sterling 9mm carbine several years ago and made it SBR. It's fun to shoot, but it's very, very heavy, 7.6 pounds empty, 8.6 pounds full. And the horizontal charger when loaded makes it a bit awkward. Anyway, the loader with its double roller follower is the best. You can load 34 rounds with ease. And it looks like a 9mm magazine should look - folded. It made me think. Some 9mm AR magazine blocks use STEN magazines. You can use STEN newspapers in sterling. So redneck logic tells me I should be able to get a Sterling magazine to work in an AR15.

I purchased two 9mm GPI dedicated plumb bobs from Black Creek Precision in Jacksonville, FL. They are designed to use the Colt magazine. I sat down with one of the shorter ones and a Sterling magazine. I spent a couple of days studying and measuring, then I got out the Dremel, some folders, and some sandpaper. After two (intermittent) days of filing the magazine well by hand and using the Dremel on the body of the magazine, I had a bottom that would accept slightly modified Sterling magazines. The magazine would lock firmly in place, but would still release when the magazine release button was pressed. I just got my Form 1 back so I finished putting the gun together. This is the result:

I've only had it in the lineup once, but it worked well from the start. Research on AR15.com told me that for a 9mm AR to work properly, it needs the right combination of spring, damper, and ammunition. So I did a lot of reading before editing. I went with a 7 oz. buffer, XP spring and 147-grain subsonic FMJ reloads. This combination has worked well.

The only drawback to this design is that the bolt does not lock after the last round. But it also doesn't block Sterling or MP5. I can live with that. The pistol will still work with original Colt style magazines even if they fit loosely in the magazine shaft. Specifically:

The other lower GPI currently remains unchanged. It will stay that way until I give the modified bottom a lot of thought to make sure there are no hidden flaws in the design. I put it together in a smaller package. Six months later, Form 1 is available.

This is a two step operation, modifying the Sterling magazine and then modifying the AR magazine well to accept the modified magazine.

So the first step is to modify the magazine. There are two types of Sterling magazines. The commercial type is made of four separate pieces of sheet metal that are spot welded together. The other is the military type magazine. The military boot has either a one-piece extruded boot body or a two-piece body with machine-welded seams. The military style magazine is the easiest to convert. The commercial version can be successfully modified, but requires some soldering. We will cover the modification of the military magazine first.

The Sterling magazine conversion is basically removing the lugs, making room for the AR bolt, and cutting a hole in the magazine body for the AR magazine latch.

The protrusions we are going to remove are the small metal spacer block on the front of the magazine, the flat spring mount on the rear of the magazine, and the ball guide on the top of the front of the magazine.

The block in front is a solid block that is easily ground in line with the body of the belly with a Dremel. You'll know you're almost even when you get to the bronze colored solder. After sanding, smooth the surface with sandpaper.

Before cutting the spring assembly, drive out the pin and remove the leaf spring. DO NOT GRIND THIS MOUNTING IN-LINE WITH THE MAGAZINE BODY! Cut dowel holes on the cut line shown and remove only the part of the bracket shown. Leave the console as it is for now.

Cut the tabs on the ball guide, but not too close to the body of the belly. Then file or use a Dremel to rough out the rest and round the edges until it matches the rest of the belly outline. The top of the magazine may need to be trimmed to fit under the receiver ball guide.

Cut the back of the magazine to match the cutout of a Colt magazine. Cut the smallest opening to start. You will be able to fine tune it for bolt spacing after the magazine snaps into the AR magazine. The slot in the Colt magazine is much larger than it needs to be.

The last thing I did was take some sandpaper and go over the top of the magazine that fits nicely into the magazine to make it as smooth as possible with no burrs.

The next part is the most stressful: taking a file to the magazine about a $200-under receiver. Put away the Dremel. Use only file and sandpaper. Before you begin, remove the magazine latch or press the button and rotate the latch down. If you don't, you will file the magazine trap when you file the magazine well. Also remove the ejector by removing the roll pin and remove the ball guide by removing the set screw behind the pivot pin.
