The Beretta 92 and SIG P226 were on the table at the same time, but the CZ 75 was developed and shot under the umbrella of the Soviet Union, entering production in 1975.

The weapon is used by the military and police forces of at least 22 countries. These organizations can buy weapons cheaper, but the CZ 75 was bought out of necessity.
The weapon is clearly for its excellent design and fighting ability. Czechoslovakia previously produced the CZ 52 service pistol, an advanced design that uses a cam-lock cylinder and fires the powerful Soviet 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge.
The CZ 52 is well received for its advanced design and excellent accuracy. Compared to the consumer grade Tokarev TT 33, the CZ 52 is very effective.
Before the war CZs served as the standard design, and the Czech pistol continued to evolve after the war, even under Soviet rule.

When a new breed of 9mm autoloaders were introduced that combined both action and magazine capacity, starting with the Smith and Wesson Model 59, the two brothers created a new pistol. It's wonderful.
The CZ 75 is a departure from the standard Soviet Block. The Makarov 9x18mm pistol is more than just a pocket pistol, slightly more powerful than the .380 ACP as well as being light and practical.
Considering the reliability of the powerful Tokarev TT 33 and its reputation, it seems surprising that the Soviets adopted the lightweight Makarov.
The CZ 75 9mm is a great fighting pistol. While the Soviet equipment is serviceable in fit and finish, the CZ 75 is well made as a pistol. The original pistols had a lacquer finish.

The new pistol features a fifteen-round magazine and doubles before firing. The Soviets demanded uniformity in the military, at least in caliber, and there was no issue with 9mm guns in the Soviet Bloc.
It's a wonder the Czechs built this great gun and chambered it for the 9mm Luger cartridge. Due to poor relations and trade restrictions, there was little hope of sales in the West when the rifle was introduced.
Likewise, improvements were made and the pistol received criticism. The CZ 75 was based on proven principles and used a Browning lock action.
The pistol uses a locking mechanism to lock the barrel in the slide and a cam system to open the barrel after the slide returns to the rear.

The pistol owes much to Petter's design as the slide runs inside the frame rather than outside the frame.
While the Beretta uses an external pull rod borrowed from the Walther P38, the CZ 75 uses a more modern depression system, allowing for better leverage and a cleaner design.
The CZ 75 is often compared to the Browning High Power. In my opinion, the pistol owes more to the SIG P210 than the High Power and can stand on its own merits as a pistol.
As just one example, the recoil spring and instructions are more like the 1911 than the Powerball in design. The decision needs some explanation.

The CZ 75 is a double action pistol. The two roosters and the hammer. After the first shot, the slide strikes the hammer and the next shot is fired in one operation.
The safety cannot be used when the hammer is down. The large two-way function ensures safety. The safety can be used when the hammer is cocked.
While this may seem like a cocked and locked carry, hammer to the rear, this is not the doctrine of CZ pistols. With most double action rifles, the hammer must be cocked for safety during tactical movements.
With the CZ 75, the pistol will be set on the safety and then you can press the safety if you need to fire again. Today's guns often place skill over resistance, the CZ does not.

The CZ 75 has proven to be a solid pistol during military testing. The pistol withstands firing attempts, including thorough disassembly and reassembly without fail.
When the pistol was finally available in the West, clones and replicas first appeared on the market. Independent testing has found the pistol to be reliable, accurate and usable.
The weapon was admired by experts in warfare and engineering. At the time, Colonel Jeff Cooper declared the CZ 75 the best 9mm service pistol.
He noted that the pistol was so good it was an embarrassment to the West. The Bren Ten, the first 10mm pistol, was based on the CZ 75 pistol.

Many of the original CZ 75 pistols came to North America due to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the new independence of former Soviet satellite countries.
While the Americans had experience with clones of the CZ 75, the copies were considered cheap shooters, not military grade. The CZ 75 changed that.
The quality and design of the CZ 75 is obvious to those experienced in the design and use of firearms. The pistol was not designed to be cheap, but to deliver military grade performance.
Likewise, the base pistol offering in this country is very attractively priced.

The P-01, right, is a compact version of the CZ 75 that many consider the best CZ pistol.
There were many modifications of the CZ 75 after the commercial release. The spur hammer has been changed to a roll type.
Perhaps the most significant modification is the addition of a pin block or safety drop to the design. This gun is marked CZ 75B.
An original CZ 75 is a rare sight these days. A major modification was the CZ 85, a poorly controlled model.

CZ also produced a different version of the CZ 75. While some were simply CZ 75 pistols near the slide and grip frame, others were redesigned. Among them is the CZ P-01.
This weapon was designed for use by European police. The desire to be lighter and more powerful than the CZ 75 led to the development of a pistol with a shorter slide and aluminum grip.
The P-01 features forward cocking serrations and a light rail. The P-01 was the first CZ pistol to have a decocker.
While the CZ 75B uses the first order, there are many that have decockers according to the customer's needs for this simple system.

With the decocker, the hammer and hand do not have to be pressed to lower the hammer, just press the level of the decocker. Many interested in the CZ 75 family consider the P-01 to be the best CZ pistol.
Accuracy is generally better for the full size CZ 75 pistol. Handling, balance and overall weight are excellent. A variant is therefore called CZ 2075, referred to by the abbreviation of the engineer's name.
The CZ RAMI was designed by Czech engineers Radek Hauerland and Milan Trkulja. They put their skills into creating the weapons that bear their name. RAMI is the best compact design.
Among the CZ 75 pistol's claim to fame is its use by the Soviet SPETSNAZ, or Special Forces. Soviet Special Forces, like us, draw different types of weapons and other weapons, such as water guns.

When you think about what was available in the early 1980s, even today, I'm sure many Soviet soldiers are confident with their CZ designed sidearm.
For collectors of the original CZ 75, the pistol is still affordable because there are no exceptions, except rare ones.
The success of the early pistols is not as good as the late model production and examples are often auctioned off. However, they are excellent shooters that have a lot to recommend for sports or self-defense.
Also, your best bet is to buy a new in box CZ as they are cheap. Early CZ 75 pistols used special magazines. The modern CZ 75B has a different magazine.

There are also modified pistols, such as the Swiss AT 84, that have a modified sight and new magazine but no pin block.
The gun is solid, however, watch out for the recoil spring and remember to replace it occasionally with a new unit. There is no chance of the slide breaking or frame breaking in my files.
I usually carry my old CZ 75 pistol when I travel. Ease of shooting, good control and good accuracy make it very useful. I carry the item in a Wright Leather Works IWB holster.
I recently compared the accuracy of this rifle using a modern combat system with a modern CZ P-01. As you can see, the CZ 75 is accurate enough for any suitable task.

The CZ 75 is an important part of military and industrial history. While prized by collectors, the original CZ 75 is still a useful service and defense weapon with excellent performance.
