Until recently, the most common compact pistol was the .45 pistol known as the Officer's Model. The Government's derivative of the 1911A1 was replaced in 2011 by a lighter pistol, the Glock 36. Chambered in .45 ACP and following the same winning formula as previous Glock pistols, the Model 36 is arguably the best compact single-barreled .45 pistol on the market today.

The 1911 .45 caliber pistol designed by John Moses Browning is one of the most successful pistols of all time. He was inducted into the U.S. Armed Forces in time during World War I and served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the end of the Cold War. The steel straight blade pistol is large, heavy and imposing, but it is also durable enough to last for decades. Colt's Manufacturing then developed and released a smaller and lighter version, the Colt Commander, but it failed to gain momentum to replace the original 1911A1.

Another pistol developed by Colt, the Colt Officer model, narrowed the gun even further, reducing the barrel length by an inch and a half and the overall weight by half a pound. The result was a smaller, lighter and more compact version of the 1911A1, better suited to officers of mechanized armies who spent a lot of time in the confines of armored vehicles or aircraft. The trade-off is that the shooter is more prone to muzzle spin, but that's the trade-off of pairing a .45 cartridge with a shorter barrel.

The Glock 36, like all Glock variants of all calibers and types, is essentially the original Model 17. Glock pistols eschew the traditional hammer and firing pin system, especially common in older pistols, and instead use a firing pin system in which the firing pin contacts the firing pin. With a firing pin gun, when the slide is cocked and full, the gun is half cocked – the gun is fully cocked and the trigger is pulled to fire. This allows a number of safety mechanisms to be built into the firing pin system, including trigger safety, firing pin safety, and trigger safety.
Another feature the Glock lacked compared to the 1911 was the use of polymers to reduce weight. All Glock pistols use a polymer frame and grip to accommodate the magazine and fire control group, reinforced in some places with steel. In addition, the use of polymers where possible reduces the weight of the Glock pistol by four ounces. The Glock 36 still uses steel sleeves, barrels, guides, and other components to handle the force and recoil of the firearm's rounds.

The Glock 36 has an overall length of 6.97 inches and a barrel length of 3.78 inches. Its overall width is 1.18 inches. It weighs just 22.4 ounces with an empty magazine, but a loaded 7-round magazine increases the weight to 26.81 ounces. An example of an officer's pistol in production today is the Springfield Armory Range Officer Compact, which is 7.6 inches long with a 4-inch barrel. Weighing in at 28.5 ounces unloaded, the all-steel pistol is a quarter pound heavier than a Glock pistol. The Range Officer Compact has the same magazine capacity as its Glock competitor, six rounds, with one round more in the chamber.
The Colt Officer pistol and the Glock 36 are both scaled down versions of military pistols. All have their pros and cons—some users may prefer the Colt's exposed hammer or the Colt's all-steel design—but as subcompact pistols, the American and Austrian pistols bring something new that full-size pistols don't. The Glock 36 is perfect for those who carry a concealed handgun, work in tight spaces, or just want a small, powerful, highly reliable handgun.
