The Beretta 92 and SIG P226 were on the drawing board at the same time, but the CZ 75 was designed and manufactured under the umbrella of the Soviet Union and went into mass production in 1975.

The gun has been used by armed forces and police in at least 22 countries. These organizations could buy cheaper guns, but the CZ 75 was bought for its quality.
The gun is outstanding in its design and combat capability. Czechoslovakia previously developed the CZ 52 service rifle, an improved cam lock design and firing the powerful Soviet 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge.
The CZ 52 is appreciated for its superior design and excellent accuracy. Compared to the purpose of the Tokarev TT 33, the CZ 52 was a success.
Pre-war CZs were technical designs and Czech guns continued to appear after the war, even under Soviet rule.

When a new generation of 9mm autoloaders was introduced, combining double-action triggers and high magazines, starting with the Smith and Wesson Model 59, the two brothers created a remarkable new pistol.
The CZ 75 was a departure from the usual Eastern Bloc issue. The Makarov 9x18mm pistol was smaller than a pocket pistol, slightly more powerful than the .380 ACP, and lighter and more useful.
Considering the powerful Tokarev TT 33's reliability and stellar reputation, it seems odd that the Soviets would adopt the lighter Makarov.
The CZ 75 9mm is a complete combat pistol. While the Soviet weapons were fit for purpose and finish, the CZ 75 was as well made as any gun. The first guns were varnished.

The new pistol had a 15-round magazine and a double-action first-shot trigger. The Soviets wanted unity in military equipment, at least, and there were no 9mm rifles in the Eastern bloc.
What's even more amazing is that the Czechs were able to produce this high quality pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger cartridge. Due to bad relations and trade restrictions, when the pistol was introduced there was little hope of selling it in the West.
Despite this, development continued and the gun gained significant popularity. The CZ 75 was based on proven principles and used a Browning locked action.
The pistol uses locking lugs to lock the barrel to the slide and an angled cam to open the barrel after the slide retracts.

The pistol owes much to the Petter design in that the slide runs inside the frame rather than outside the frame.
While the Beretta used an external drawbar borrowed from the Walther P38, the CZ 75 design uses a more modern internal drawbar, which allows for better strength and a cleaner design.
The CZ 75 is often compared to the Browning High Power. In my opinion, the pistol owes more to the SIG P210 than the High Power and holds up to any handgun.
Just one example: the recoil spring and guide are more similar in design to the 1911 than the High Power. The act of initiating requires an explanation.

The CZ 75 is a double-action, semi-automatic pistol. The cock of the trigger drops the hammer. After the first shot, the breech explodes the hammer and subsequent shots are fired in single action mode.
The fuse cannot be used when the hammer is down. The long double-action trigger acts as a safety feature. The safety can be used when the hammer is released.
While this looks inviting to carry cocked and locked, hammered to the rear, it is not a tactical CZ pistol. Most double action rifles require the hammer to be cocked during maneuvers for safety reasons.
With the CZ 75, the pistol can be locked and then you can pull the safety when you want to fire again. Modern handguns often prioritize technology over tactics, while the CZ does not.

The CZ 75 has proven itself in rigorous military testing as a reliable pistol. The gun passed firing tests, as well as detailed disassembly and reassembly, without failure.
In fact, when the gun finally became available in the West, clones and copies were the first to appear on the market. Independent testing has proven the pistol to be reliable, accurate and effective.
This gun impressed combat engineers. The late Colonel Jeff Cooper declared the CZ 75 to be the best 9mm pistol ever made.
He noted that the gun was so good it put the West to shame. The Bren Ten, the first 10mm gun, was based on the CZ 75 pistol.

Many of the first CZ 75 rifles came to North America as a result of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the new independence of the former Soviet satellite nations.
While the Americans had experience with clones of the CZ 75, the copies were considered cheap shooters, not military service rifles. The CZ 75 changed that.
The quality and design sophistication of the CZ 75 was evident to those experienced in the design and use of handguns. This gun was not intended to be sold cheaply, but was intended for military service.
However, initially the gun was offered in this country at a very good price.
Best Upgrades For The Cz 75 Handgun
The P-01, right, is a compact version of the CZ 75, which many consider to be the best CZ pistol.
After the start of commercial production, there were many modifications to the CZ 75. The spur hammer was changed to the Rowel type.
Perhaps the most significant change was the addition of a shot block or drop protection to the previous design. These guns are marked CZ 75B.
An original CZ 75 is a rare find today. An important modification is the CZ 85, a model with full two-hand control.

CZ has also developed compact versions of the CZ 75. While some are CZ 75 pistols with shorter slide and grip frames, others are heavily reworked. Among them is the CZ P-01.
This gun is designed for use by European police. The desire for a lighter and more compact version of the CZ 75 led to the development of a short slide gun with an aluminum frame.
The P-01 features front tension serrations and a lightweight rail. The P-01 is one of the first CZ pistols with a decocker lever.
While the CZ 75B uses a first action, there are variations that offer a decocker due to customer demand for this simple system.

With the decocker, the hammer and the trigger never need to be depressed, lowering the hammer, simply decorating the decocking lever. Many who appreciate the CZ 75 family consider the P-01 to be CZ's best service pistol.
Accuracy is often greater than the overall size of the CZ 75 pistol. Handling, balance and overall weight are excellent. One such variant, designated CZ 2075, is referred to by an engineering acronym.
The CZ RAMI was designed by Czech engineers Radek Hauerland and Milan Trkulja. They combined their talents to create an instrument that bears their name. RAMI is an excellent, compact design.
The CZ 75 pistol's claims to fame include its use by the Soviet SPETSNAZ or special forces. Soviet special forces, like ours, rely on many different guns and other weapons such as underwater cannons.

Given what was available in the early 1980s and even today, I'm sure many Soviet soldiers felt safe with their CZ-made sidearm.
For those who collect the original CZ 75, the pistol remains affordable as there are no rare changes, only a few unusual ones.
The finish of the early pistols was not as impressive as the later production models and examples often ended up begging at the pawn shop. However, they are excellent shooters that would be highly recommended for sport shooting or self defense.
However, it is better to buy CZ new in the box as it is affordable. The first CZ 75 pistols used a special magazine. The modern CZ 75B has a separate magazine.

There are also revolutionary pistols such as the Swiss AT 84 which have improved sights and a new magazine but do not have a firing block.
The pistol is strong, but pay close attention to the recoil spring and occasionally replace it with a new unit. There are no instances of slide breaks or frame cracks in my files.
I always carry my original CZ 75 pistol when I travel. I carry a piece in a Wright Leather Works IWB holster.
I recently compared the accuracy of this pistol with modern combat charges and a modern CZ P-01. As you can see, the CZ 75 is more accurate than any decent job.
